The mint julep became the official drink during the 1930s, when Churchill Downs started serving it in souvenir julep cups, which it was ordered for the first time in 1937, according to Meehan. - (Source: Good Morning America Kelly McCarthy)

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 parts Maker’s Mark®

  • 1 part cinnamon simple syrup - Recommended Amoretti syrups

  • splash of lemon juice

  • 1 part apple cider

  • 3 slices of apple

  • 6-8 mint leaves (leave some to garnish)

Cinnamon Syrup

If you are anything like me I was trying to find a way to buy this instead of making it but it was actually pretty easy:

  1. In a small saucepan, stir together 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water, 2-3 cinnamon sticks and 1-2 dashes of ground cinnamon.

  2. Boil the ingredients over high heat, reducing the heat from low and simmer for 15 minutes.  Turn your heat off and let it steep with cinnamon sticks 10 minutes.

See, I told you it was easy!

Even easier, you can order Amoretti Cinnamon Syrup that will work just as great! I did this both ways and they were both amazing!

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a shaker add 3-4 apple slices & 6 mint leaves and start to muddle it.

  2. Add 1.5-2 parts of Maker’s Mark®

  3. Squeeze a lemon into the shaker

  4. Pour in your cinnamon syrup (do not add the cinnamon sticks, save those to garnish)

  5. Fill the shaker about 3/4’s with ice and SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE

You want to shake the shaker for at least 15 seconds, that’ll really get all the flavors mixed perfectly!

  • I used a copper beaded mint julep cup for this cocktail.

  • Mix sugar and cinnamon together on a small plate, rim your cup with lemon (so the sugar sticks) and dress your rim with cinnamon and sugar for that extra detail.

  • Fill your cup with crushed ice and pour into your cup

  • Garnish with your cinnamon sticks and a mint leaf and there you will have the perfect Apple Cinnamon Mint Julep by Maker’s Mark®!
